Consortium for the Advancement of Wood to Energy Solutions

In partnership with the USDA Forest Service’s Forest Products Laboratory and Georgia Southern University’s Herty Advanced Materials Development Center, the Endowment has launched the Consortium for Advanced Wood-to- Energy Solutions (CAWES), to assess and assist the commercial viability of torrefaction. 

The relatively recent technology “roasts” wood in a high-heat, low-oxygen environment, creating an energy-dense product that can more easily be shipped, stored, and used to produce a carbon-friendly and renewable alternative to coal.
